My Review:
My Overall Thoughts: This was a really sweet story! It is a perfect Valentine’s Day read, and it is very short (49 pages), so it is easy to read in one sitting! Most of the book doesn’t take place on Valentine’s Day, so it really could be a good read for anytime of the year (especially wintertime, since Christmas also features in the story).
Plot: This is more of a slice-of-life story, as we see how Lore, the main character, adjusts to life in a new town. We see her celebrating Christmas with her family, starting a new job, making new friends, and more. It is a nice, gentle read if you don’t want a story with a lot of drama. I also really liked how the plot was inspired by Little Town on the Prairie.
Characters: I loved the characters in this story! Even though it’s just a novella, the characters were all well-developed. Lore was a relatable main character; I like how she learned to overcome her shyness and reach out to others, and what a caring person she was. Hamish was really sweet, too. Lore’s family all seemed like a lot of fun, even if we didn’t get to see a lot of them. And, of course, her co-workers in the church nursery and all of the toddlers were so much fun (and very realistic, haha).
Writing Style: It was easy to follow along with exactly what Lore was thinking and feeling, and the descriptions of the events that took place were well-written and relatable. The writing style is very cozy and relaxing.
Themes: With this being more of a slice-of-life story and relatively short, the themes weren’t super prominent, but we do see Lore learn how to step out of her comfort zone, learn how to make friends, and begin to understand what good friendships (and maybe love, too) are like.
Content Notes: As the title of this novella implies, Lore does begin to “fall in love” with someone in this story, so there is some light romance (falling in love and the feelings involved, hand holding, one cheek kiss). Taylor Swift’s music is mentioned several times.
